In Memoriam

Donna Jean Godchaux, inducted with the Grateful Dead in 1994, started her career by singing at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, including on sessions for Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” and Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman.” She was a member of the Dead from 1972 to 1979, recording with the band on the classic albums Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, Blues for Allah, Terrapin Station, and Shakedown Street. The only woman to ever serve as an official member of the Dead, Godchaux also sang on solo projects by various members, including a close association with the Jerry Garcia Band. After leaving the group, she formed the Heart of Gold Band and the Donna Jean Godchaux Band.
