2026 Nominee

Shakira fused Latin roots with global pop ambition to become one of the most successful and culturally significant artists of her generation, paving the way for Spanish-language music on the world stage.

The undisputed Queen of Latin Music, Shakira is a driving force in the global crossover success of Spanish-language music. With infectious rhythms and vibrant melodies, a signature warm energy, and a multicultural sound beloved by millions, she delivered hits like “Whenever, Wherever,” “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” and “Hips Don’t Lie.”

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll in Barranquilla, Atlántico, Colombia, she began writing poetry and lyrics at the age of 4 and performing at hometown events at 10. In 1991, at the age of 13, Shakira signed with Sony Music Colombia for a three-record deal. On her third album, Pies Descalzos, she exploded into the mainstream, securing Pop Album of the Year, Pop Video of the Year, and Best New Pop Artist at the 1997 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

In the years that followed, Shakira shattered boundaries by fusing her Latin roots with reggaeton and modern rock, taking her music into new markets. Supported by Latin music veterans Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Shakira propelled into U.S. stardom with the critically acclaimed Dónde Están los Ladrones? and her first English-crossover album, Laundry Service, which became one of the best-selling albums of 2002. In 2010, Shakira collaborated with Freshlyground to release “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, selling four million copies worldwide. Shakira continued to be part of the popular culture landscape with the singles “Try Everything” (2016) and “Zoo” (2025), for Disney’s Zootopia film franchise.

Shakira has won four Grammy awards and fifteen Latin Grammys, topped global charts and sold over 125 million records, was named one of the most-streamed Latin artists by Spotify (paving the way for other Spanish-language superstars like Bad Bunny), and was recognized as one of the world’s most powerful and influential women by both Forbes and Time. In 2025, Shakira officially set the Guinness World Record for the highest grossing world tour of all time by a Latin artist. An active philanthropist and humanitarian, Shakira uses her platform to promote equality and provide aid for children in need across Latin America.
