Initially embraced for their explosive energy and instantly classic songs, Pearl Jam became known for fierce artistic integrity, social consciousness, and for calling out corporate greed. In the new millennium, their music morphed from raw, angsty rock to dynamic, nuanced songcraft, rich in melody and delivered to an ardent, global fanbase through mesmerizing live shows. Their themes of identity, resilience and justice continue to resonate.

Signature Sound
Beginning as a punky, grungy update on classic rock, Pearl Jam met massive success with increasingly introspective music, adding layers and textures, songs thick with distortion and groove, and soft with acoustic overtones. With rising social consciousness, they took risks both musical and business-wise, all further intensifying the love and respect of a loyal, global fanbase.
San Diego security guard Eddie Vedder wrote and sang lyrics for guitarist Stone Gossard’s instrumental demo, and Pearl Jam was born.

T-Shirt Tribute
On April 16, 1994, Pearl Jam appeared as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live. As SNL’s end credits rolled and the cast gathered onstage to say their traditional good-nights,
Eddie Vedder opened his jacket to reveal his T-shirt with the letter K he’d written over his heart in tribute to Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, who’d died on April 5.
