By blending folksy storytelling, country charm and Caribbean rhythms, Jimmy Buffett birthed the “Gulf & Western” style and launched a lifestyle brand. With themes focusing on escape, reflection and the sea, his infectious songs and jubilant concerts resonated with a legion of fans who proudly identified as a community of “parrotheads.” Beyond music, he built an empire of restaurants, resorts and clothing, all promoting adventure and fun.

Beginning with an emphasis on country and folk, Jimmy Buffett gradually incorporated coastal rhythms like reggae and calypso, creating a unique tropical rock blend. The ‘70s and ‘80s saw him expanding into more streamlined pop rock, but all the while, his core themes of escape, lighthearted humor and coastal life remained.
Buffett’s first hit, No. 30 on the Hot 100, was written at a Howard Johnson’s while on tour.

Buffett purchased this Martin D-28 dreadnought at George Gruhn’s original Nashville shop in the early ‘70s. Buffett referred to it as his ‘A’ guitar. After a psychedelic vision, he asked his friend Russell Chatham to paint a mermaid on it.
Buffett thought the portrait looked too much like “the Herbal Essences shampoo girl,” but nevertheless used the guitar to write his tribute to Key West, “Margaritaville.”

Jimmy was a real example of a man: no puffed up defensive macho bullshit, but a model of how to enjoy the great gift of being alive.
