About "TMI: Memoirs of a Go-Go"

The Go-Go’s were the first all-woman rock group to hit number one on the Billboard charts while playing their own instruments and performing original songs. As guitarist and lyricist, Jane Wiedlin helped define that revolution. In her memoir, she shares the raw, unvarnished journey of an artist who overcame it all. From the early L.A. punk scene, Jane’s song “Our Lips Are Sealed” catapulted the band to fame. The Go-Go’s hit dizzying heights, only to splinter apart in a whirlwind of touring, tension, and chaos rivaling any band of the era. Yet Jane’s story goes far beyond the stage.

About Jane Wiedlin

Jane Wiedlin was born in Wisconsin and moved to California’s infamous San Fernando Valley, home of Valley Girls, at age six. She was an avid music fan from that moment on, exposed to the greatest rock and pop songs of the 1960s by her older siblings. In high school she was enamored with the glitter rock scene ie David Bowie, Marc Bolan, etc. At the time glitter/glam rock was a small musical movement in the US with equal parts music, clothing and attitude. Jane attended Los Angeles Trade Tech College, where she learned the nuts and bolts of the fashion industry, with the aspirations of becoming a designer. In 1976 she discovered the punk rock scene in nearby Hollywood. Most of the kids in the scene were former glitter rockers, the punk scene basically following that same format of music, clothing and attitude. It attracted rebels, misfits, malcontents and artists. Jane started designing punk clothes, learned to play guitar and started writing songs — something she could never have dreamed of as a girl. In 1978 she formed the Go-Go’s, and with their poppy punk sound, the band grew popular up and down the West Coast. In 1981 the Go-Go’s signed to indie label IRS Records, helmed by the legendary Miles Copeland. Against all odds, after a year of release, the album, Beauty and the Beat, went to #1 on the Billboard charts.
