An outspoken, bawdy, and irreverent antihero known for thumbing his nose at convention with his outrageous, satirical lyrics, Mojo Nixon mashed up rockabilly, punk, blues, and outlaw country in an inimitable way.
Born Neill Kirby McMillan, Jr., Nixon got his start as a punk artist in the early 1980s before teaming up with percussionist Skid Roper; the duo released their eponymous debut LP in 1985 and scored a novelty hit with “Elvis Is Everywhere” in 1987. The song helped make Nixon an early fixture of MTV, where he hosted various programs and created short films.
After parting ways with Roper, Nixon continued recording solo albums and worked with the Toadliquors and fellow iconoclast Jello Biafra. He also acted in films including Great Balls of Fire! and hosted the Sirius XM radio show The Loon in the Afternoon. Namechecked by the Dead Milkmen in their 1988 single “Punk Rock Girl,” Mojo Nixon was a cult icon who influenced numerous artists including X and Beck, and his spirit lives on in every musician who pushes boundaries and strives for authenticity.
Nixon passed away on February 7, 2024. On Tuesday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at the Ohio State House, the General Assembly of Representatives will deliver a proclamation to his family recognizing the longtime southern Ohio resident for his contributions to the culture. In addition, the day will be designated Mojo Nixon Day in the bi-partisan resolution.
