Elvis Costello and the Attractions perform at the Royal Albert Hall with the 92-piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

King of America, by Elvis Costello (and credited to “The Costello Show”), is released. Recorded in Los Angeles with American musicians, it is Costello’s first album without the Attractions since My Aim Is True.

Elvis Costello marries Caitlin O’Riodan, former bassist with the Pogues.

Having moved from Columbia to Warner Bros., Elvis Costello releases Spike, his first album in two and a half years.

Elvis Costello’s challenging and unconventional collaboration with the Brodsky Quartet, The Juliet Letters, is released.

Elvis Costello reunites with the Attractions and producer Nick Lowe on Brutal Youth. A five-month world tour, beginning in May, follows.

The Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions, consisting of 22 tracks handpicked by Costello, is released.

All This Useless Beauty, by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, with songwriting contributions from Paul McCartney and Aimee Mann, is released.

The Elvis Costello-Burt Bacharach collaboration “God Give Me Strength,” composed for the film Grace of My Heart, is nominated for a Grammy Award.

Elvis Costello moves from Warner Bros. to PolyGram. He signs an innovative deal allowing him to release albums in a variety of genres on different PolyGram labels.
