On Tuesday, December 4, 1956, an impromptu jam session formed in Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.  The session, which featured Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, would eventually be called the “Million Dollar Quartet.”  This session produced a wide array of music, reflecting the varying roots of 1950s rock and roll, including gospel, bluegrass, country, blues, and rhythm and blues.  In this Rock and Roll Night School, we will examine selected recordings from this session, including several Chuck Berry tunes, the New Orleans traditional “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” gospel classics such as Thomas Dorsey’s “Peace in the Valley” and Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” plus many more.  These recordings provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of rock and roll’s greatest performers and allow us to explore the legacy of this monumental event.  This Rock and Roll Night School is presented in conjunction with Playhouse Square.

This event is free and reservations are not required.  Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rock and Roll Night School will also be streamed LIVE on rockhall.com. Click here to view this live stream event.
