January and February 2012 | Suggested Grade Level: 5-8 / 9-12
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates Black History Month with a special program honoring the contributions of African-Americans to music and society in the United States. This class illustrates the complicated and changing roles of women in hip-hop. From early pioneers, to the game-changing artists of hip-hop’s second wave, to today’s leading innovators, women have continually (and effectively) worked to have their voices heard in a genre too often dominated by men. By exploring representative songs from artists such as Roxanne Shanté, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Missy Elliott, and Nicki Minaj, students will examine the undeniable, yet often overlooked, impact and influence of women in hip-hop – then and now.

Although the music industry has typically been male-dominated, women have been successful performers, producers, songwriters, and record label owners throughout the history of rock and roll. Women have played, and continue to play, an important role in shaping the history of popular music – both onstage and behind the scenes. In celebration of Women’s History Month, students will examine the significant contributions women have made to rock and roll, then and now, through recordings and video performances of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees and other legendary female artists. The specific class topic will be announced.
