Posted by Rock Hall

Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced the Alice Cooper Band, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Tom Waits as its 2011 performer inductees. Also being inducted this year as individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award are Jac Holzman and Art Rupe.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Recording Excellence (previously the Sidemen category) will be presented to Leon Russell. The 26th annual ceremony will take place on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and be broadcast on Fuse, Madison Square Garden’s national music television network.

“We are pleased to welcome these artists and executives into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman. “They truly represent the variety of people that have defined and continue to influence music and the business of Rock and Roll.”

The performer Inductees are:

·    Alice Cooper Band
·    Neil Diamond
·    Dr. John
·    Darlene Love
·    Tom Waits

Ahmet Ertegun Award recipients (nonperformers):

·    Jac Holzman
·    Art Rupe

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Recording Excellence
(previously the Sidemen category):
·    Leon Russell

The 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by more than 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.  Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.   Through approaches as creative and diverse as the music itself, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum tells the story of rock music with its exhibits, education programs and Library and Archives.

Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced at a later date.  For more information about the inductees, please click here.

I can't believe the bands that are snubbed every year. While I realize that not everyone can be inducted at the same time, KISS and Rush being completely ignored? Both bands are still performing, releasing albums and have been influences on many bands that have already been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. I would like to see a real significant artist from my era be inducted before they are all dead and gone!

Dennis | Wednesday, December 15: 9:29 a.m.

i still to this day do not understand why the rock and roll hall of fame is not including CONNIE FRANCIS. i do not get it guys, what more does she have to do, been there from the beginning and is still touring. give her the respect she deserves while she is still with us. maybe you guys need to check her discography out and see she was more than a one hit wonder. and lead the way for many of rocks ladies in the early days. this will probably fall on deaf ears. but connie's fans will always love her.thanks for this space and your time. dave metz.

Good Grief - yet another year where you have again omitted one of the most enduring bands of the last two centuries - RUSH !!

Mind you looking at past winners "Grand Master Flash ? WTF) to be honest Rush are really way above the levels you have set.

All respect to Alice Cooper but to be honest the other nominations really are minor league in the history of Rock compared to the musical output, diversity and influence that Rush have had on the industry in over 30 years.

Nick Wickens | Wednesday, December 15: 10:18 a.m.

Just drawing from the list of finalists (not even mentioning the acts that have never made the ballot, e.g. the Moody Blues, Rush, Chicago, Paul Anka, Connie Francis, Deep Purple), I applaud the selections of Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond and Leon Russell. No idea why Dr. John and DArlene Love were elected; both great performers, but hardly Hall of Fame material. Tom Waits in the performer category? As a songwriter, maybe, but even with that, Laura Nyro would have been a far better selection. Surprised Bon Jovi didn't make it, what with Jann Wenner's preoccupation with making sure "name" acts get in so attendance is better. J. Geils Band snubbed again; what else is new?

Tim Jensen | Wednesday, December 15: 10:27 a.m.

After the 27 years of influence Bon Jovi has had on rock & roll music, I don't understand how this rock band can be overlooked as an inductee. This should have been a what is called a "no brainer".

Cheryl | Wednesday, December 15: 10:48 a.m.

Donna Summer should have been in the Rock Hall years ago and what about Heart! Why are they repeatedly ignored. Stick a fork in me cause I'm done!

Woo Woo | Wednesday, December 15: 10:54 a.m.

I'm generally pleased with this year's inductees. I know rock and roll casts a wide net as it should. But I don't think there is a place for rap in a rock and roll hall of fame. I think rap is just as out of place as artists like Barbra Streisand or Barry Manilow would be at the other end of the spectrum.

I agree that quite a few deserving artists have been left out, including the MOODY BLUES, Yes, Jethro Tull, Kiss and Rush. They may not be loved by the critics, but there's no denying their popularity and influence. They also are real rock and roll acts, as opposed to Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, etc.

Looking ahead a few years, it's hard to imagine who would be worthy of nomination. Who came along after Nirvana and Pearl Jam to have a hall of fame career? Maybe Green Day?

Rob Ebbin | Wednesday, December 15: 10:56 a.m.

I'm a charter member and can not believe Bon Jovi was not on the list! He and Richie Sambora were at the first concert ever for the R&R opening in Clev Wow who votes!

Kathy Wydick | Wednesday, December 15: 11:13 a.m.

I cannot believe Bonjovi did not get in.

BHC | Wednesday, December 15: 11:30 a.m.

Missing the Boat...again - It is supposed to be the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame. Can someone from the Hall please tell me their definition of Rock and Roll? If it is not defined groups such as The Doobie Brothers, Rush, and The Guess Who - then I have no idea what Rock and Roll is. When are they going to get in? 2050?

Shawn McCart | Wednesday, December 15: 11:41 a.m.

Echoing two previous comments, the lack of RUSH being included in this HOF borders on ludicrous. Their anthology of music produced over such a long span of time more speaks for itself. Their worldwide popularity coupled with their musical talent and innovation should make them a shoe-in...ten tears ago. Hard to take the Rock and Roll HOF seriously while this trio continues to be marginalized.

Derek Sessions | Wednesday, December 15: 11:47 a.m.

How could you not induct the J Geils band? Best live band ever, definitly mor albums than half of your inductees. Lost all respect

phil maniaci | Wednesday, December 15: 11:55 a.m.

Maybe Rush hasn't been inducted because their fans are insufferable whiners who clog up the RnR Hall of Fame website with their complaints?

Good for Tom Waits!

Pete | Wednesday, December 15: 11:57 a.m.

While I don't disagree with the Rush/KISS snubbing discussion, it's really irrelevant of who was inducted - you saw the nominations and if a band wasn't on that list, they weren't going to be inducted. Your beef is with the nomination process. Now, if you think from the nominations that the wrong people were chosen, that's a relevant issue.

Denise | Wednesday, December 15: 11:59 a.m.

I cannot express my disappointment that Laura Nyro wasn't inducted. This must be a travesty. People are simply unaware of the impact she had on popular poetry during the height of her career.

Jimmy Davis | Wednesday, December 15: 12:09 p.m.

Why isn't Journey ever mentioned? They deserve to be inducted, as the band has been around since the 70's, and still has a huge following today! If it wasn't for awesomely talented guitarist Neil Schon, Journey would not even exist today.

Lisa | Wednesday, December 15: 12:11 p.m.

I think the Hall decision makers need to take another look at Tommy James and the Shondells. Whether you call it Frat Rock, Bubblegum, or whatever they were very much the forerunners of much of what became popular in Pop/Rock music. From the early DIY mentality that was "Hanky Panky" to being one of the forerunners for subtle crossover contemporary Christian music (U2 anyone?) before there we ever even such a concept, Tommy James has contributed a unique and hit sustained carrer to the leagcy of Rock. Listen to "Sweet Cherry Wine" which so beautifully bridges the peace/love sentiments of the psychedelic era with accessible Pop/Rock sounds, protest music ("oh we aint' gonna fight") along with Christian imagery and you will realize the guy was much deeper than the uprecedented (at the time) Top40 success lets on. His songs have become breakthrough hits for other artists.

Tom | Wednesday, December 15: 12:18 p.m.

Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame finally got it right with Alice Cooper. Neil Diamond you can't ignore. Dr. John? Darlene Love has a beautiful voice though I can't name one single album of hers. Still missing in action: how bout: Deep Purple,Yes, Roxy Music, Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople, Humble Pie, Heart, T-Rex, Alvin Lee, Ten Years After, Mick Ronson, Cheap Trick, Rush, Nick Lowe, Doobie Brothers, Jethro Tull, The Knack, Lovin' Spoonful, Mountain, Lou Reed, Slade, Small Faces, Steppenwolf, Styx, Thin Lizzy, Albert King, Freddie King. I'm not about dissing the bands & individual performers who have already entered the hall, I just feel that some significant acts like those listed above should have entered long before others. It seemed like the hall started correctly by honoring the pioneers of rock - they should have continued along that avenue by honoring those that set the foundation in various rock forms before honoring those that followed. Metallica before Deep Purple? Come on, man!

Victor Martinez | Wednesday, December 15: 12:28 p.m.

Conrats to Tom Waits! Truly a man whose influence alone is worth the induction. However, music lovers are doubly blessed; Mr. Waits' body of work is not only prolific but consistently innovative and touching. This day is long deserved. Cheers Tom! Here's to hoping for a new album in 2011.

Jerry Jones | Wednesday, December 15: 12:29 p.m.

Journey, Styx, KISS, Kansas, Rush, Yes, and even Bon Jovi all deserve to be in the RRHOF. This "honor" has lost all credibility. I hope that someone can wake up and salvage this once great concept.

Scott | Wednesday, December 15: 12:33 p.m.

Just another insufferable whining Rush fan here that while expecting the snub, has to laugh when the likes of Dr. John, Alice Cooper, and Tom Waits get inducted (Dr. John and Tom Waits..Really?). Until Rush and KISS get in the fans of the 2 of the most influential ROCK and ROLL bands of all time will keep clogging up website.

Joe S | Wednesday, December 15: 12:36 p.m.

ARE SERIOUS HOW COULD YOU NOT INDUCT BON JOVI THEY HAVE BEEN ROCKIN FOR 27 YEARS AND AGAIN THIS YEAR THE NUMBER 1 TOURING BAND FOR THE SECOND TIME

mark reeder | Wednesday, December 15: 12:45 p.m.

Its about time LEON RUSSELL gets in!!!

ER | Wednesday, December 15: 12:49 p.m.

Please... Chicago has to be considered.

Fred | Wednesday, December 15: 12:58 p.m.

This award is an insult to what is true R & R. It is not worthy of respect as long as it nominates rappers and other marginal acts over classic R&B, rock and metal bands. What other criteria is there to get in? I think that the "winners" (past and present) should ALL stand up and demand justice for the people that came before or with them and were not nominated due to some obvious favoritism/pandering. It is and always will be a blight on this very noble idea untill they get it right.

E | Wednesday, December 15: 1:31 p.m.

Congrats to Tom Waits, Dr. John, and Alice Cooper! I echo the sentiments above, RUSH, Yes, Jethro Tull, and Deep Purple should all be in the hall! As for Bon Jovi, he can wait a year or two until some of the well-deserved aforementioned artists get in!

discobret | Wednesday, December 15: 1:45 p.m.

One person I believe worthy of the Hall of Fame is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame. He is a real talent both as a guitarist and song writer.

Scott

Scott McKelvy | Wednesday, December 15: 1:46 p.m.

The J. Geils Band. Enough said. If John "nasal" Bon Jovi makes it in first, I will give up rock music for lent.

Lori | Wednesday, December 15: 1:51 p.m.

What about The Moody Blues? They started the whole "rock with classical orchestra" movement.

LE | Wednesday, December 15: 2:03 p.m.

ALBERT KING!!!!

Booker T | Wednesday, December 15: 2:14 p.m.

Holy cow. Bad enough that the Geils Band didn't make it, but what about Three Dog Night, Kiss, and Frank Zappa? Who runs this outfit anyway. I've been in the radio biz over 30 years and no one ever asked me who I thought should be in.

Kevin | Wednesday, December 15: 2:42 p.m.

How about the greatest party band of the '60's---Paul Revere and the Raiders! They deserve to be in.

John McDonough | Wednesday, December 15: 2:46 p.m.

Steve Perrys voice does not compare to any one else out there and yes out since the 70's...what will it take for this "ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME" to put the right people in.

Gee | Wednesday, December 15: 2:56 p.m.

Tom Waits - hooray! It feels like you are running out of classic rock and roll nominees though. Where is Boston? KISS? Jim Steinman and Meatloaf? How about more of the original SUN STUDIOS recording artists that pioneered rock music but never gained the attention Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee did?

Dan | Wednesday, December 15: 3:19 p.m.

Neil Diamond and Alice should have gone in years ago. Waits and Dr. John have been an enourmous influence on others and have made various older influences prominent in their work thereby keeping things alive and viable to newer generations. I am especially glad that Leon got in for he was not just a great sideman but an incredible live performer and a driving force behind the live sucesses of many more commercially sucessful acts. As to who did not get in, well many of them will eventually get their chance. Look how long it took Neil Diamond who was never even nominated before today. This was Bon Jovi's first nom and I believe only their first or second year of eligibility. They will have their day. As will Rush and probably Kiss. I am more concerened for acts like the Moody Blues and Laura Nyro and others who year by year fade in the public consciousness. Laura has had a profound effect on the works of many piano based female names today. She also wrote a slew of music covered by others who had big hits with her songs. I hope people like her do not slip through the cracks.

TC | Wednesday, December 15: 3:27 p.m.

What about Deep Purple,America & Bread?

RATMAN | Wednesday, December 15: 4:52 p.m.

it'a bout time that Alice Cooper got his day in court; but we are still waiting for true justice for punk pioneers The New York Dolls, and Motown's first girl group(and first #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit) The Marvelettes!!!!

jimi la lumia | Wednesday, December 15: 4:56 p.m.

These four bands should be in strictly based on body of work and influence... Cheap Trick, Journey, Kiss, and Rush.

DW | Wednesday, December 15: 10:44 p.m.

I'm surprised that neither Clara Ward nor Marion Williams has been inducted in the early influences category. Aretha Franklin without Clara Ward? Perhaps, but Clara's influence on Aretha is indisputable... an influence that Aretha constantly acknowledges. Marion Williams' influence on rock and roll, along with soul, is incalculable... Little Richard, with his falsetto "whoa" and almost manic fervency, is only the most heralded of her followers. The list of artists either directly or indirectly under her influence comprise a substantial proportion of the rock pantheon; prominently positioned at the forefront of popular culture, not to mention occupying a position in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Just consider the artists influenced by Little Richard and that "whoa." As Dave Marsh wrote, Williams laid one of the "cornerstones" of rock and roll" by passing that gospel-injected "whoa" to Little Richard.

Wayne Trujillo | Wednesday, December 15: 11:04 p.m.

I can't believe that nobody mentions Three Dog Night. They should have been long ago. And where is Journey.

Arthur T. Brand | Wednesday, December 15: 11:57 p.m.

nella | Thursday, December 16: 3:08 a.m.

After my visit to the Hall last summer, I could not believe Alice Cooper was not included. I expressed my concern to a higher authority, and now my vision has come true. While he should have been there on day two, I am happy and to see his name and Band on the list now. Another visit will be planned...

Daz | Thursday, December 16: 6:41 a.m.

I am so overjoyed that The HOF has finally seen fit to include Leon Russell in the Hall. Now I can go to Cleveland's museum to see all of the enshrined members. I'm 61 years young and promised myself that I would not attend until Leon was inducted. He is so much more than a side man. He has been touting his talent for more than 5 decades. Elton John was wowed by how fast Leon would knockout tune after tune for their joint effort, "The Union."

It does an old man good to know that one of the most prolific writers, arranger and performer to be enshrined with with his contemporaries...many of whom are less worthy than "The Master Of Space and Time."

"Downtown" Howard Brown | Thursday, December 16: 6:59 a.m.

from wikipedia "Over the course of their career, Rush has come to release 24 gold records and 14 platinum records (3 of which have gone multiplatinum), placing them within the top 3 for the most consecutive gold albums by a rock band"

This band started in 1968 an is currently doing a world wide tour selling out every show. While it sounds like the Rolling Stones(founded 1962) this is RUSH!!!! I can't take the R&R Hall of Fame seriously with the annual snubbing of RUSH. They have little credibility and will soon have zero if they keep ignoring such influential bands who are so clearly a big part of Rock and Roll History. WATCH the recent documentary on RUSH if you question their influence!

Joe Valeri | Thursday, December 16: 7:31 a.m.

I was a charter member who quit several years ago because the rock hall has turned into a "music hall."

Rick | Thursday, December 16: 4:09 p.m.

We all know that Leon should have been inducted years ago for his more than 50 year musical history. We thank Sir Elton for his love for Leon and everything he's done for him, including the 2011 induction.

Micky Hannah | Thursday, December 16: 4:36 p.m.

Great to see Dr. John and Tom Waits inducted, but why not Donovan? - He has been more influential and important in music than Alice Cooper. Other artists that should be in the Hall of Fame I think should be, Arlo Guthrie, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Michael Bloomfield, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lord Buckley, Mose Allison, Charley Patton, Joan Baez, Thelonious Monk, Lenny Bruce, Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, and Blind Blake, Loudon Wainwright III, and John Prine.

Robert | Friday, December 17: 5:08 a.m.

hooray, finally the R n R HOF has put Alice Cooper where the band belongs. This after watching ABBA and Madonna be inducted ( what a joke ) The fans of AC were relentless on this site to keep it up until it has happened. Eddie trunk of VH 1 Classic was also a great push behind this too, noe R n R HOF , do the next proper thing and induct RUSH and KISS next.

kelly | Friday, December 17: 1:31 p.m.

Interesting set of inductees this year, some that probably should have waited a little longer and some (Alice Cooper/Tom Waits) that were among the biggest omissions from Cleveland. A shame the ballot had to feature two hip hop acts as they probably both canceled each other out in the voting.

Casper | Friday, December 17: 6:13 p.m.

Excellent choice of Leon Russell. He has been an incredible influence and performer for decades. I first saw him perform live in 2005 and from the first notes I couldn't believe how epic his piano is. Leon's work on this year's "The Union" album is amazing. His vocals on "When Love is Dying" is outstanding... he goes toe-to-toe with Neil Young and Elton on the Civil War-based "Gone to Shiloh"... his emotion on "In the Hands of Angels" is overpowering... his dueling-piano with Elton on "A Dream Come True" is just out and out fun. Well deserved!!!

Perry | Saturday, December 18: 4:57 a.m.

Instead of complaining about who is not in, let's applaud those who made it. There is obviously a wait
obvious choices like Bon Jovi, Chicago, Doobies, Heart
must endure. Is it cause they stil tour alot or are too mainstream? I liked these choices & hope "sideman"
or "recording excellence" award in future includes names like Billy Preston, Brian Eno & Jeff Lynne.

Tom G | Sunday, December 19: 2:41 a.m.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE recognize Dick Dale before he dies. King of surf guitar and inventor of so many sounds used today. He is 73 and still shreds. Saw him last night and it was like sitting in my living room listening to my grandpa tell stories about the old days. This guy has influenced so many of the past inducties. What the hell!!

Russell | Sunday, December 19: 11:59 a.m.

I have more respect for the fact madonna is in the rock and roll hall than run d.m.c. who even picks this? Rush and yes and kiss don't deserve to be in here but chaka khan does? No moody blues but well indict dr. john? Come on now america

Pat | Sunday, December 19: 11:52 p.m.

Connie Francis??????? Nothing else to say!

Rick Philemon | Monday, December 20: 6:43 a.m.

Alphabetical order:
Allan Parsons, Ron Argent, America, The Buckinghams, Rick Ocasek and The Cars, Chicago, Cliff Richard, Dick Dale, Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra, The Fortunes, The Grass Roots, The Guess Who, Johnny Rivers, Kansas, Lovin Spoonful, Manfred Mann, Seals and Crofts, Simon and Garfunkel, Steve Miller Band, The Turtles, Three Dog Night.

Each of these acts was bigger than most of the individuals and performers in the RRHF. When the hall adds rap acts it can no longer be called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some in the 2011 class- never heard of em. The fact that the Buckinghams, Chicago, Cliff Richard, The Guess Who, The Turtles, and Three Dog Night aren't in begs the question, are the voters aware of the sixties and the seventies?

djwilliams | Monday, December 20: 11:08 a.m.

Judas Priest should definitely be inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. They were one of the forerunners of the speed metal we ahve today, inlcuing Metallica, who were also inducted.

Kyler | Wednesday, December 29: 10:25 a.m.

Let’s not get too narrow in our musical categorizations. Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, and other pioneers did not speak very highly about some popular Seventies stadium rock bands, openly questioning whether that music should even be called rock n’ roll. The truth is there’s always been more to the art form than three loud cords.

I’d like to see more interest in recognizing the early pioneers before they’re all gone or forgotten. For instance:

Dick Dale – the surf guitar god, and the first rocker to incorporate extreme volume and manic reverb in his playing. He’s still going at age 73.

Albert King & Freddie King – notable blues guitar note benders and sustain masters. Both heavily influenced Texas blues rock guitar players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons. IF SRV were alive today, he’d want the Kings to be inducted before himself.

Big Mama Thornton & Big Maybell Smith – the original women of rock. They recorded the first versions of “Hound Dog” and “Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.”

Sonny Boy Williamson – Chess blues musician and the second greatest harmonica player that ever lived. He was a primary influence on the best, Little Walter.

Hubert Sumlin – played guitar on many classics from Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. He Influenced Clapton, Hendrix, and Buddy Guy, and Hubert is still alive and performing at 79.

Quincy Jones – perhaps the greatest living music producer and icon of jazz, R & B, pop, movie soundtracks, etc. No one in the business commands more respect across musical genres than the “Q.”

Clyde Stubblefield – the “Funky Drummer,” who’s playing with James Brown established the rhythmic foundations of funk, disco, and hip-hop. He’s recognized as the most imitated and sampled musician on earth, and he’s still playing.

Techno / Synth music: Techno music is a fundamental element of funk, disco, new wave, and hip-hop. It’s time for a techno pioneer to be recognized.

Lastly, I believe there are some performers who may not deserve induction for their musical contributions but should be recognized in some other way as icons that changed popular music:

Liberace – OK, when you stop laughing you might remember that the man was the godfather of glam and androgyny in pop music. Freddie Mercury, Elton John, David Bowie, Prince, David Johansen (Buster Poindexter/New York Dolls), and Roxy Music all copied his style.

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins – the inventor of macabre / shock rock. Without him, there’s no Alice Cooper, King Diamond, Diamanda Galas, Ozzy, Dio, Marilyn Manson, or Arthur “I am the god of hellfire” Brown.

James | Tuesday, January 4: 4:56 p.m.

I'm glad to see great artists like Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond & Tom Waits get their honors, but I've also got to throw my hat into the ring with those who clamor to see artists like Rush & Kiss inducted, and I can't stress enough my desire to see the incomparable DICK DALE finally get the nod (ideally before he passes, as the man's getting on & his health has been poor of late).

Scott Redman | Thursday, January 6: 10:17 a.m.

What do you guys have against The Guess Who? A Canadian bias? (I'm American).

Pete | Sunday, January 9: 8:55 p.m.

While I understand and honor the selection process and am generally pleased with the inductees, I believe that Iron Maiden deserves to be inducted above many that are chosen. Please consider Iron Maiden for 2012.

Kerry O'Neill | Thursday, January 13: 11:46 a.m.

Why isn't Journey in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? This is terrible. Journey has been around since 1973, became top 10 mega-stars in 1978. They are the oldest, by far, musicians on the top 20 most downloaded list to this day. Toni Basil, the one-hit wonder, is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but no the most influential group of all time.

Melody | Saturday, January 15: 11:50 p.m.

It's astounding that The Guess Who are not in yet. If they were american I think they'd have been in already.

Canadian | Sunday, January 16: 9:07 p.m.

Frank Sinatra should be inducted as an early influence. He was one of the first music stars to become a teen idol, like many stars are now. He was also one of the first crossover artists, being involved in many movies. He trademarked his songs with his personality. These are many things that Elvis is known for but Frank did first.
Included Jethro Tull is the only large rock band with a flute at the moment and served as a great time during their concerts. Their song aqualung has provided a catchy intro that many learn on guitar. Judas Priest was the forerunner band of speed metal. They were one of the largest bands to feature two guitarists. They had an abundance of hits. They extremely influenced almost ever big speed metal band, including Metallica.

Kyler | Tuesday, January 18: 3:06 p.m.

The credentials to get into this "elite" club is and has been laughable for some time now.Dr. John? Ar you kidding? Lets beat the Rush drum yet again...
By any account..best or close to best drummer on the planet. Ask any precussionist. In the top 3 by all.
Influence on R&R..ask any musician under 50 years old and they are in the top 10..or 5..or 3.
How many Rush songs can you name? 10? 20? More?
2112? Moving pictures? Signals? What does it take?
Stop being clowns and let the deserving drink from the battered cup and bring some respectability back.

Dennis | Wednesday, January 19: 8:51 p.m.

congrats to the ALICE COOPER GROUP! finally a band that deserves it and were and are true rock legends.
too bad GLENN BUXTON is not alive to see it! he was a much better guitarist than he got credit for! i met alice mike neal and dennis and they were all really nice to talk to and super cool guys!

steve mccarthy | Monday, January 24: 12:44 a.m.

I would be interested in the reasons why some groups DONT get on that list. i mean: it's always easy to praise certain people for what they've done and appreciating achievements. but you obviously can't deny that some of the groups not on that list would have at least as much reasons as groups that are on that list.
Journey, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple... Why not them? It is hard, if not even impossible, to find reasons to not induct them. Simply thats why the process of inducting groups is flawed and dobious.

Jim | Monday, January 24: 5:21 p.m.

Another good "catch up" year for the RRHOF. I'm pleased with this year's class--all deserving.

Some suggested artists for consideration that have yet to be finalists:

The Clovers--I'm guessing this is a simple oversight, as they are too historically important to keep out. This missing link between inductees The Ink Spots and The Drifters/Coasters.

Jesse Belvin--Oft-overlooked innovator/singer/songwriter.

Paul Revere & the Raiders--Silly costumes, yes. Great music and lots of hits, you bet. Put 'em in.

Todd Rundgren--Versatile and innovative performer and producer.

The Moody Blues--Yeah, I know you guys hate 'em, but they've proven more durable than many of their contemporaries who've already been inducted.

Hall & Oates--Most successful duo of the rock era. R&B-based pop-rock that stands the test of time.

Deep Purple--Durable, innovative, and influential hard rockers long overdue for recognition.

Rush--Highly influential power trio. Nice Canadian guys who follow their own muse. Kinda like the Grateful Dead for nerds.

There are so many bands that we could do this with, but to begin with, I would love the voters to explain how Rush is not in their club. Seriously, let's here the explanation. Album sales? No! Concert attendance? No! Musicianship? Hell No! Influence on other musicians? There are a rare few in the hall ahead of them there! Longetivity? Same lineup for over 35 years. An entire genre of rock has Rush at it's roots. The list of artists in the Hall that are not as nearly as deserving as Rush is enormous. It just boggles the mind. Please, Hall voters, shed some light. I would love to hear the logic.

bon jovi needs to be in

doug | Thursday, January 27: 10:14 p.m.

Carole King should be in the Hall of Fame as an artist, as well as a songwriter(which she is). Her Tapistry album alone should put her there. Laura Nyro's top selling single was "UP On The Roof". One of Carole King,Gerry Goffin songs, not her own. Laura Nyro never had a number one hit that she sang. James Taylor's "You've Got a Friend" was his only number one hit----again written by Carole King, which was given the grammy that year for song of the year. If anyone is being snubbed, it's her. She should be recoginized for the artist she is----one of the best!

ann marie craig | Wednesday, February 9: 8:49 p.m.

I too believe that Dick Dale should be inducted!

And also think that Rush is most deserving of an induction.

Justin | Monday, March 14: 11:56 a.m.

Alice Cooper and Neil Diamond belong no doubt. The others should not be there before Deep Purple , Steppenwolf or a host of other rock bands.Even Bon Jovi with their success belongs.

james | Tuesday, March 15: 4:12 p.m.

Seriously, when are you going to induct the Guess Who? They are amazing artists and Burton Cummings is and has remained a phenomenal talent for over 40 years! The Guess Who had a gold record before he was even out of high school, certainly they merit a place in the hall of fame as the first Canadian artists to have a Billboard #1 with "American Woman." They belong in the Hall--just do it already.

Kathleen | Thursday, April 14: 12:33 a.m.

I don't understand the criteria for membership? BON JOVI should be a SLAM DUNK! After all, they authored rock and roll's national anthem (Dead or Alive).

No KISS, no RUSH. I was fortunate to grow up during the heyday of rock and roll. But some of the judges at the Hall of Fame must not relate to that era.

BON JOVI: Over 130 million sold

Chris | Thursday, April 21: 3:41 p.m.

I also cannot believe that Bon Jovi did not make it in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

Apryl Mayo | Thursday, June 9: 1:31 p.m.

I don't know much about how they determine who becomes part of the RRHOF, but no Bon Jovi?! What?!! They have been around for nearly 30 years with more than 120, 000, 000 records WORLDWIDE. Bon Jovi has also had more than one #1 album in the country, along with sold out concerts and more than 10 albums produced in the last 30 years. Once again, I don't know what it takes to be a part of the RRHOF, but doesn't any of this count?!

Shelby | Sunday, June 19: 6:36 p.m.

I find it hard to believe that the rock and roll hall of fame has failed to induct bands such as the Guess Who and Rush. Considering some previous inductees to the hall are really not 'rock' performers in the strictest sense, but were nominated due to their influence on rock and roll, it seems odd that these legendary, talented and influential bands are omitted year after year. Randy Bachmann not only was a driving force behind the Guess Who, but also B.T.O., who lest we forget, was a top touring and album selling band who played rock and roll and sold millions of albums and who's songs are still used in commercials and played on radio. How about "Takin' care of business" Rock and roll hall of fame? Lets get these guys in there.... SOON!

Dave Tarvin | Wednesday, July 6: 4:41 p.m.

Dr. john and Tom waits are in the same level as let´s say frank zappa and lou reed, it was about time. But seriously Deep Purple in the history of rock are more important than Kiss, Rush or Bon Jovi, please let´s justice be donde!

mateo kesselman | Thursday, July 14: 9:41 p.m.

Ahmet Ertegun Award recipients (nonperformers in tell i see Jim Steinman in this i will not consider the hall of fame legit wrighter of to many hits for me to count

Chris | Monday, August 8: 2:14 a.m.

First Off, How in hell Rick James isn't in the Rock Hall of Fame?, This guy was one of the biggest artist in the late 70's/ 80's.... Was even bigger then Prince and Michael Jackson at one point, Yet you'll put acts like Run-DMC and Grandmaster Flash in there?

Jerome Woods | Monday, August 8: 3:19 a.m.

Iron maiden really ought to be in here. Just sayin'.

Ben | Wednesday, August 17: 8 p.m.

I laugh at the joke that is some of the inductees thus far when it has taken this long for Alice Cooper--who is much deserving to be recognized--to be included. But it does not end there.

Rush, KISS, Iron Maiden? They are nowhere to be seen, and each of them is worthy of praise and recognition. So much of modern rock owes its existence to these and other bands not yet inducted. So, 2012, please consider these artists. Honestly.

Teresa Kraemer | Tuesday, August 23: 6:32 p.m.

Not having Chubby Checker and the Moody Blues in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is like having a soda fountain with no ice cream and no straws. Comprendo?

Stephen Henkin | Sunday, September 18: 4 p.m.

Please consider HOLLY BETH VINCENT. Her first album with her band Holly and the Italians and her solo-album, Holly and the Italians, were both released over 25 years ago. She is a rock-pioneer much too often overlooked.

Kevin | Tuesday, September 20: 2:20 p.m.

hmmm. Agree with a lot of you guys about Judas Priest, KISS, etc. I wonder, though....
WHERE THE HECK IS DEF LEPPARD?

Anthony Dias | Thursday, September 22: 2:12 p.m.

In the Hall of Fame should be KISS, Judas Priest and Deep Purple.
I can not believe they are not on the list....

Martijn | Tuesday, September 27: 9:57 a.m.

You can KISS my backside if you think I would step a foot inside the hall of fame until bands like KISS, Deep Purple, Rush, even Motley Crue... But you have have Blondie & John Cougar Menstalcramps... How long til Boy george and Hall & Oats make it in....

andre | Tuesday, September 27: 12:39 p.m.

2. Bon Jovi
3. RUSH

THE BOSS | Thursday, September 29: 3:20 a.m.

I'm not sure how you can omit one of the founding fathers of rock and roll, Dick Dale. A true original in every sense of the word. Consistently listed at the top by Rolling Stone, and Guitar Magazine. Give the man his due!

Rock and Roll | Monday, October 17: 3:19 a.m.

Dick Dale.

NoelSquitieri | Thursday, October 27: 7:24 a.m.

I don't know what the hold up is, 19 Studio albums released from 1974 to 2007, all platinum or better. Three Highly talented rock and roll musicians who to this day are still perfecting their craft, still touring to sell out crowds and still inspiring new musicians to follow their dreams. Even Metallica agrees. Induct RUSH into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they have earned it.

Robert Billings | Friday, November 11: 9:55 a.m.

First time on this website. Where are the Moody Blues? How can they not be part of the R&R HOF?

Chris | Friday, November 25: 12:26 p.m.

I can't believe that Bon Jovi isn't in there! Passed up last year. Not even an inductee again this year. Guns & Roses???? Give me a break! Bon Jovi has been rocking all along. Guns & Roses has been out of it, trying to get back into it, and might be somewhat okay if Axel can make it to the stage. Bon Jovi plays better music and has made more music than a lot of bands/people in there. They're still selling out stadiums after almost 30 years. What the heck!!!

DONNA G | Wednesday, December 7: 3:14 p.m.

Can somebody tell me what the criteria is for induction into the RRHOF and why the Doobie Brothers do not meet the criteria or can't get in for some reason? There are other bands mentioned that I also agree should be in. It would be nice to see some of these true Rock and Roll bands get in and soon! These ommissions are really hard to believe.

John B | Wednesday, December 7: 4:34 p.m.

who hasn't been inducted that needs to be:
Rush
KISS
Kansas
Foreigner
Styx(with what ive seen they should be in)
ELP(meh)
Bon Jovi(appealing to the masses?)
Journey
many more BA groups.

ryan | Wednesday, December 7: 8:54 p.m.

Just had a look at this years inductees and could not believe that Phil Lynott / Thin Lizzy did not get inducted, once again. For the likes of the Beastie Boys (who mainly made their living as a HipHop act) getting into the RRHOF is just ludicrous. I am not biased in anyway but I can relate to many other people leaving comments, in that other bands who actually deserve the recognition are being constantly overlooked. It just seems to me that these choices are mainly to do with what is deemed popular instead of what is deserved.

Gary Cunningham | Thursday, December 8: 8:11 a.m.

What a shame that Jethro Tull is not yet in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of fame. They really deserve it. Amen.

Christoph Koydl | Sunday, December 18: 4:12 a.m.

Is the nominating process flawed? If the RRHOF states that influence and inovation is a consideration, there are many bands, groups and individuals who have sells in excess of 50 million that may never get in. Having par artists inducted into the hall is a curiosity. Maybe Willie Nelson as a songwriter and George Strait as a performer are on the list as well. Three Dog Night should be a no brainer. A vocal lineup unmatched, backed by a great band. How does anyone feel about Grand Funk? Without them there may not be a Silver Bullet Band behind Bob Segar

keven smith | Sunday, December 18: 11:22 a.m.

I still fail to understand why The Guess Who are continually overlooked. Randy Bachman deserves to be inducted twice as a performer (The Guess Who and Bahcman-Turner Overdrive) in addition to being inducted as a songwriter. Burton Cummings should be inducted both for his work with TGW and his solo work. And what about John Mayall? Has anybody been more influential than he has? How about Jethro Tull? What idiots make these selections anyway?

Tony Pompa | Tuesday, December 20: 3:21 p.m.

I just can not understand why Jethro Tull is not in the hall of fame. A incredible band that is still playing. What gives? Does anyone know why?

Jonathan | Tuesday, December 27: 12:14 p.m.

Had a stop over in Cleveland last Wednesday en route to Toronto and thought about visiting RRHOF but are still upset that CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS have not been recognized by RRHOF for their contribution to Rock and Roll history outside of the US in the late fifties and early sixties BEFORE the Beatles and AFTER Elvis went Hollywood!

Arlene Queen | Tuesday, January 10: 8:26 a.m.

Jethro Tull is not in? Are you kidding me? Aqualung, Benefit!, Thick as a Brick.........all classics with not a bad song on the entire album. Sold out MSG and Shea Stadium every time they played.
Come on HOF make it right.

Joe | Saturday, January 21: 11:44 p.m.

WHY....WHY....is Dick Dale not in yet? Aside from inventing a whole genre of guitar, being the 1st to play reverb, his contributions to what we know as rock & roll cannot be measured via his relationship with Leo Fender. Dick was the one who "beta tested" this new thing called a Stratocaster. He was the one who blew up or burst into flames 100s of Fender amps until Leo & his gang could develop something to handle him.

Please....right this wrong & induct a true guitar legend, pioneer & contributor - Dick Dale
