The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum

The Making of the 2010 Inductees Exhibit

Tuesday, March 16: 3:16 p.m.
ABBA’s Bjorn Ulveaus’ pair of white platform boots.

Inductions are always an exciting time at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, made even more so when a new inductee is in the house!  Terry Sylvester, lead singer of 2010 inductees the Hollies, made an appearance on the Museum’s Main Stage on March 10. Sylvester performed six songs, including Hollies’ hits “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress) ,” “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” and “Bus Stop.” Inspired by the Rock Hall’s featured Bruce Springsteen exhibit, Sylvester performed the Hollies’ version of Springsteen’s “The Fourth of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).”  Sylvester reminded the enthusiastic mid-day audience that the Hollies recorded the first-ever cover of a Springsteen song with “Sandy,” in 1975, well before Springsteen’s break though into superstardom.

After his performance, Sylvester stopped by the Hall of Fame to check on the installation of the New Inductees exhibit.  Sylvester handed over the acoustic guitar used on the Hollies 1974 hit “The Air That I Breathe” for the exhibit, giving me information about the guitar for the exhibit text. It’s a curator’s dream to have an exhibit donor at hand to provide pertinent details about the artifacts!

This year’s group of inductees is eclectic and reflects the diversity of rock and roll. My fellow curator Craig Inciardi and I travelled to the U.K. to collect from the Hollies, ABBA and Genesis. I met with a representative of ABBA at the groups’ touring exhibition, ABBAWorld, currently on display at Earls Court in London. I then traveled to Manchester to meet Hollies’ drummer and group archivist Bobby Elliot. After securing the Genesis collection, Craig, who is based in New York City, collected artifacts closer to home for our Non-Performers – songwriters Otis Blackwell, Mort Shuman, Jesse Stone, and the Brill Building teams Jeff Barry / Ellie Greenwich and Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil. Craig also met with this year’s Ahmet Ertegun Award recipient, David Geffen, in Los Angeles. Curatorial Director Howard Kramer didn’t have far to travel to collect from Michigan natives, the Stooges. In fact, the Museum already had an impressive collection from the late Ron Asheton of the Stooges, which was donated back in 1997.

We make every effort to get our New Inductees exhibit installed in time for the induction ceremony. The exhibit is ready and opened during the Museum’s Induction Ceremony Viewing Party. The balance of the exhibit will be opening the following week.  We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2010 Inductees!

You are so short-sighted in a couple of aspects. Primarily the Blues is now rarely mentioned. The blues is the jazz, r & b, soul, funk, rap and rock. one less member from now on

Monique Jones | Tuesday, March 16: 8:01 p.m.

You people really need to look over the Career of Warren Zevon, why 7 years after he passed he has not been inducted I do not know. It is surely an oversight that need to be corrected as soon a s possible, the list of artists who have worked with him alone says he he is well respected in the Industry.

John Mackay | Tuesday, March 16: 10:40 p.m.

I know you hear this a lot, but I have never recieved an answer as to why Rush is not in. I understand their are a lot of bands that this same question comes up with, but I just feel very strongly that Rush deserves to be in. So is their a bias against them..or..do you feel that prog rock is no good? I mean seriously, Rush. They are easily hall of famers, what are they missing?

Jesse Berke | Thursday, March 18: 2:19 p.m.

They should put in all of the stooges gold records as an exhibit. Wait, they didn't have any because nobody bought their records.
Oh well I guess the voters really are clueless.

TC | Friday, March 19: 7:14 p.m.

I don't understand, for the life of me, why is Steve Miller not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?

Michael Leavitt | Sunday, March 21: 10:47 p.m.

@ John Berke:
They hate Rush. Plus, Peart's drumset wouldn't fit through the door.

ML | Thursday, April 8: 12:39 a.m.

I agree with Jesse Berke. Why not Rush? They have made more of an influence over the years than many other inductees. We would like an answer to why they have not been considered or that they have not been inducted. This is very frustrating!

The fact that Rush has been snubbed for so long is ridiculous. It is tempting to look at other bands that were selected and compare their accomplishments, but that seems bitter and skewed by personal taste. I would rather focus on the body of work that Rush has produced and the incredible musicianship of the band. Honestly, can you name another band that boasts such amazing musicians? All three are at the absolute top of their craft. Some of us love music with a deeper meaning and Rush delivers. The fact that they have been ignored by the selection committee makes me question the depth of the committee's musical knowledge.

Kyle Galpi | Wednesday, April 21: 2:14 p.m.

Come on...no RUSH?????? This is absolutely incorrect and downright naive to think they dont deserve it. Why not change your name to the POP or RAP Hall of fame?? How in the world could someone from either of those musical genres make it in and not someone like RUSH?? They have many many gold records to prove their sucesss over the past 35 years.....AND .....did I mention.....they are a ROCK BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Silly silly silly Hall of Fame. :(

JT | Tuesday, May 4: 6:10 p.m.

RUSH is not in but ABBA is an Inductee????????? Let me clue you in on a little secret. In the 70s, during the Disco Sucks era...I can guarantee a certain Chicago ball park didnt have ANY RUSH records in the bin they blew up that night during the disco demolition, but MANY MANY ABBA records!

JT | Tuesday, May 4: 6:13 p.m.

Not sure Warren Zevon would even want to be in the R&R Hall of Fame.

Shawn | Thursday, May 20: 2:55 a.m.

The fact that Rush is not in the fame is a joke. They have been rocking sold out shows for over 30 years now. I mean come on, they tour by them selves and put on a three hour show. How many other bands can do that? If you want to help join the fight to get them in go to facebook and join the group " Rush the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame". Any support will help. so please join and spread it around.

Raymond Fluharty | Friday, May 21: 4:26 a.m.

It's a complete joke that Rush isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame. They have the fourth most Platinum records behind the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Aerosmith; but yet they still haven't been inducted?

Matt Fissel | Wednesday, June 9: 11:10 a.m.

Rush is to good for the hall of fame they are in it for the music and don't need to be inducted in order to be the best.

Nate | Thursday, June 10: 7:43 a.m.

i agree with nate, in order for them to be the best they dont have to be inducted, but still i think they top many other bands or people that have been inucted

Zak | Sunday, June 13: 9:51 a.m.

Rush is third on the all time consecutive platinum or gold records released. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are ahead of them respectively. I believe that says something in itself.

Mike | Tuesday, June 15: 2:04 p.m.

As I watch "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage", I have to ponder the same question that many have-Why aren't these guys in the HOF? There are many different musicians who claim that they are extremely influenced by this trio. Their longevity and talent speaks for itself. Give these guys the respect they deserve.

Mikey | Saturday, June 26: 11:05 p.m.

Rush has earned a place in the Hall by anyone's account! Name another band with a comperable body of work and list of accomplishments who is still able to sell out a stadium and ISN'T in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Go ahead...I'll wait.

Jen | Monday, June 28: 12:05 p.m.

I’m an old Rush fan.

“Moving Pictures” was my last album before I drifted away from the band during their “synthesizer period” which lasted through the 1980’s. I’ve had the requisite Rush experiences of listening to “2112” and “Hemispheres” cranked through the headphones. Stood transfixed during their mesmerizing live shows – Rush played to perfection. Countless bouts of air drumming on the steering wheel to “The Spirit of Radio” or “Red Barchetta”.

I caught their live show again in the late ‘90s. And again on their 30th Anniversary tour. They hadn’t lost a step. Still mesmerizing. Then it dawned on me that they have not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They have always been marginalized by the music critics but so have other seminal bands like Led Zeppelin, (inducted 1995), Cream (inducted 1993), Iggy and the Stooges (inducted 2010).

What could be keeping them off the list? With 24 Gold records, 14 Platinum and 3 Multi-platinum records while ranking 3rd in consecutive record sales behind The Beatles (inducted 1988) and the Rolling Stones (inducted 1989), they have certainly fueled the industry. Their total album sales are 40 million worldwide.

Couldn’t be that.

They have been cited as influencing various artists including The Smashing Pumpkins (inductee 1996), Primus and Metallica (inductee 2009). They are as important to Progressive Metal music as Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker (both inducted in 1991) and Elmore James (inducted 1992) are to the Blues.

Do they have the chops?

Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart should be held in the same regard as Chet Atkins (inducted 2002), Allen Toussaint (inducted 1998), Stevie Wonder (inducted, 1989) , Les Paul (inducted 1988), Jerry Lee Lewis (inducted 1986) and Jimi Hendrix (inducted 1992) for pure virtuosity.

That’s not it.

The members of Rush certainly haven’t rested on their laurels. True artists constantly endeavored to push creative boundaries for their own personal and professional growth –critics be damned. Bruce Springsteen (inducted 1999), Elvis Costello (inducted 1999), John Lennon (inducted 1994), David Bowie (inducted 1996), The Velvet Underground (inducted 1996) – to name a few – all fall firmly into this category. Does Rush? With 19 albums and counting, their discography should speak for itself.

It’s a real head scratcher.

Maybe it was the fact that Alex Lifeson had once expressed his indiffence toward a Hall of Fame induction for the band. With all due respect to Mr. Lifeson, don’t hold that against him. Rock and roll has always tried to bite the hand that feeds. That’s its nature. To the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, induct Rush. They have earned it. Their fans have earned it. Besides, it would make for one of the best live performance since the induction of Prince (2004).

Wayne | Monday, June 28: 2:29 p.m.

Is there a LIVE music hall of fame?

I'm sure that RUSH would be inducted before anyone else...

Murray | Monday, July 19: 12:09 a.m.

I cannot believe that you have continually ignored the third largest grossing group in North America, 3rd only to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. You say, who is that? Its Rush! I have considered coming to the Hall many times, but that fact that you ignore such a seminal group is unacceptable.

Jon | Wednesday, July 21: 9:22 p.m.

I reviewed the list of the inductees. Besides Floyd, I can't find any other progressive rock bands on there. Rush is the obvious one, but Yes, Moody Blues, ELp and Styx are all missing.

Howard | Wednesday, July 21: 9:32 p.m.

If it doesn't matter to the Band Rush, it doesn't matter to me. If you ever seen them live that would make it clear they are better than the vast( and I mean vast) acts. Past or present. Not having a band like Rush inducted makes the HOF magrinal when you look at some of the inductees. I've never listened to someone new just because of the HOF opinion.

Don | Monday, September 6: 10:33 a.m.

The R&R HoF needs Rush more than Rush needs the R&R HoF.

Andy | Thursday, September 16: 10:59 a.m.

Rush needs to do what the Sex Pistols did, refuse to come and mock the who thing. Rush is great. We don't need these "experts" in music what is good. Come on last year....Chilli Peppers and LL Cool J? Rest my case. Rush please stay out!! Don't associate yourselves with these fools!

Jenny | Monday, September 20: 12:09 a.m.

The fact that Rush isn't in this list only shows that this list means nothing, is managed by nothings, and will always be nothing.

hell the only reason I eve know about this list was because I saw a documentary on rush and they mentioned it.

Terry | Tuesday, October 12: 2:33 p.m.

There is alot of great musician's out there but what we see with Rush that has rarely been seen before, is what can only be considered 'the perfect storm'. HOF wake up and smell the coffee!!

Dennis | Saturday, October 23: 11:19 a.m.

I share everyone's displeasure and amazement at the omission of RUSH. Ridiculous!!!!

Roy | Thursday, January 6: 1:08 p.m.

It is hard me to understand how the HOF can overlook Rush again. I believe that this glaring omission has cause the HOF much credibility. Reminds me of the Grammy’s selecting Jethro Tull over Metallica as Best Album of the Year in 1990. The decision made the Grammy’s appear out of touch with the Metal culture. You may not like Rush. But you cannot deny their signifigance to the Rock community.

Dan | Tuesday, January 18: 5:39 p.m.

I live in Australia where Rush has never and are not likely to ever play live and I still can see the strength of their contribution to the music industry worldwide. It is just not fathomable that they can continue to be overlooked by the HOF. When they announce their next tour I will be flying to wherever I have to from Australia, to watch them play live. Someone should build a Rush museum in Cleveland. Imagine the crowds that would go to it.

Lee | Tuesday, September 27: 12:45 a.m.

I absolutely agree with the previous posts - Rush definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame! I Cannot believe they aren't already!

Karen | Tuesday, September 27: 3:36 p.m.

So Run DMC is inducted but not Rush? Sure, that makes perfect sense.

There is obviously something else going on here.

Karl | Wednesday, September 28: 10:57 a.m.

I do think the boys,(Rush) will eventually get the nod to be inducted and when the time comes I hope they turn their heads and IGNORE them!! For true Rush fans we already know where they belong. For you commitee members go to a Rush show and seeing people young and old watch this band and say to yourself,"Why havent we acted sooner"? Too late..you just missed out. Nuff said

gary | Thursday, September 29: 11:54 a.m.

ok i'm finally glad chilli peppers got in, but its 100% crazy that its 2012 and Warren Zevon is not in.
