This week, guest writer Jon Shapiro, Producer of the U2 3D movie (along with his brother, Peter Shapiro, John Modell and Director Catherine Owens) shares thoughts on the making of the groundbreaking movie, working with U2 and experiencing the movie in all its digital 3D glory– this time at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new Foster Theater.
Through January 2, 2010, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is showing a film unlike any you’ve ever experienced (unless of course you’ve seen U2 3D before). I traveled to Cleveland to unveil it last month and was absolutely blown away by the technology and viewing experience in the Museum’s incredible new Foster Theater.
The first-ever live-action digital 3-D film, U2 3D places viewers within the pulsing energy of a U2 stadium concert. Combining innovative digital 3-D imagery and multi-channel surround sound with the excitement of a live U2 concert – shot in South America during the final leg of their “Vertigo” tour – it creates an immersive theatrical experience unlike any 3-D or concert film that has come before. Ushering in a new dimension of filmmaking, U2 3D takes viewers on an extraordinary journey they will never forget.
I’ve watched this movie more times than I can even recall (several dozen times to be sure…), and this was the best I’ve seen it.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the film:
Says director Catherine Owens, “Bono wanted to go somewhere magical with the creation of U2 3D,” seeking to intensify the already ecstatic feelings evoked by U2’s live concerts.
U2 3D came to life through the passion and production savvy of 3ality Digital, one of the world’s leading live-action, full service production companies specializing in advanced 3-D technology of which I am a proud co-founder. After shooting a single-camera test during an early “Vertigo” tour concert at the Anaheim Pond, we ultimately received the thumbs-up from U2 to have our huge production crew travel and shoot on the road with the band in South America, with Owens as director. “Bono felt that if we were going to do this right, we had to do it in South America, since the band’s presence after an eight-year hiatus from the continent was certain to draw vibrant and enthusiastic crowds” explained Peter Shapiro.

With what became the largest collection of 3-D camera technology ever used on a single project, the production crew joined up with U2’s globe-trotting caravan for a month and shot the huge outdoor stadium shows (not seen in North America) at cities in four countries including Mexico City, Mexico; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; and Buenos Aires, Argentina.
After five days of shooting, however, what the production had was still not enough to create the experience that everyone envisioned.
I felt that this film should be a love letter to U2’s fans and that what we needed, ideally, was to set cameras onstage for intimate close-ups. What we needed was to shoot without an audience. That need was fulfilled by Bono who, along with the entire band, agreed to perform 10 songs in a cameras-only show the night before two public concerts in Buenos Aires. “It was an incredibly generous gesture, but not surprising,” said Owens. “U2 is about passion, politics and love; in addition, there is an overriding aspect which is their creative generosity. It’s a generosity I’ve personally experienced for as long as I’ve worked with them.”
During the March 1-2 concerts in Buenos Aires, Argentina (River Plate Stadium), the production team set up unobtrusively for mid- to long-distance shots, capturing the performances onstage and the passionate reactions of 80,000 fans from nine digital 3-D camera systems.
“The challenge of working with U2 and digital 3-D technology on this film has been very exciting. When collaborating with U2 you walk a fine line between making art and reflecting the honesty of their performance,” said Owens. “The band has been involved in each step of the process and having this kind of commitment from them has been very encouraging for everyone working on the film. Between their passion for the project and our extraordinary team, I feel that together we have carved out a delicate and exquisite piece of film history.”

Seeing U23D when it was first released in L.A. started an odyssy for me that brought U2 back into my life after a long absence. I saw it twice, once in IMAX, before it disappeared from local theaters. I have since acquired all the U2 CDs and concert DVDs I can lay my hands on and they have rejuvinated my love and enjoyment of rock music. I’ve been waiting for U23D to be released for home consumption in some format, but to no avail. I’m dying to add it to my collection since I’m wearing out the ones I have. Maybe it’ll be re-released in theaters if it can’t be put on DVD. I saw my first live U2 concert October 09 at the Rose Bowl. Mindblowing experience, but the music itself was not up to U2’s high standards and the huge crowe was strangely subdued compared to the ones that have been filmed. After all this I can’t wait to see U23D again to see if it really is as incredible as it seemed when it changed my music life. Heartfelt thanks to U2 and all the folks that made U23D possible.
I’m not a particularly big U2 fan but I went to see U2: 3D in IMAX when it came out and I still haven’t seen a movie that took advantage of 3D to the extent that that film did on an artistic level (the superimposed images especially blew my mind). It was an incredibly immersive and innovative experience and it made my top 10 list that year (surprising even to me). I really hope that 3D technology catches up soon cause I would like to have a 3D version of this to own on blu-ray…
I saw this in IMAX, it was incredible.
Set list is too short for such an eclectic band.
FOR 2011! Chicago, Blood Sweat& Tears (rock/horn bands),Leon Russell, Guess Who, Johnny Winter/Stevie Ray, Jethro Tull (are u kidding?), David Geffin, Hall & Oats(blue eyed soul)Todd Rundgren, Boston,Journey (arena)
Alice Cooper,Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, ..God I could go on!
U2 has been making film history all year. In addition to 3D, U2’s song “Winter” was recently nominated for an oscar (it was in the film “Brothers”). Never have I heard a song so relevant to a film. It was a powerful end to an emotional film.
Wow...I took my Son ( we both play guitar) to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and just happened to see the U23D movie. We were both fascinated by the artistry and the intensity of the film. It is by far the best concert I've ever been to. And yes, I said concert because we felt like we were literally on stage with the band during the film. Good stuff!
My wife and I saw it this past weekend (Springsteen Weekend)at the rock hall and loved it. It really felt as though you were on stage with the band and part of the crowd. In fact, there was one person in the theater who clapped after a song.
Wow, it would be amazing to see U2 concert in 3D. I haven't actually seen anything in 3D, movies and kind I mean! :D But it's not worth hoping something like this would ever arrive to Finland. That's not nice...
I was one of those people who actually clapped. I have seen it twice and could go back again and again. Simply fabulous. I went without knowing much about Bono and his group, but I am now a avid fan. God Bless!
I've seen U23D more times than I can count. I can't believe how much 3D technology has advanced since 2007 and I'm excited to see what's in store next especially with bigger production budgets and larger camera crews. I wish more bands would embrace 3D projects particularly because the leaps and bounds made with production stage shoots and digital effects. Keep rockin' U2!
If this is for Bono and U2 i'm trying to get my son a present he has been to many of your concerts the last 4 in a row with a bad back thinking this was going to be your last tour...he drove all night stood all night the day before the concerts ...he has lost his job, and his home ..got divorced ,,,And i wanted 2 do something nice for him for Christmas or his Birthday in March on the 21st,, he has a collage of your pic, on his wall by his t.v. with pic, from the concerts in 11x14 In" matted frames looks really good he now has what i have a bad back Deterating spine and artiritus in his spine..like me i don't get around much anymore but he pushes himself he is a wonderful son and a great hard worker..I was wanting to get him an autographed pair of sunglasses like u wear or something saying it's from u it would make him so so happy it has been his long time dream to meet u since Grade school but i don't see that happening? but threw all his prob, i thought i would like to get him something he would really cherish,, I can either buy the sunglasses or trade u a Irish green clover rosery w/ the pope on it from Ireland ? i just want to make him laugh again for he is such a wonderful son..to me I know this is prob, not possible but doesn't hurt to ask ..From Jerry's Mom :Rose Ty either way and may God Bless u and the Band and excuse my spelling my eye site and brain doesn't work like it use to do ..lol..
I’ve seen U23D 5 times in the theater, 3 of them IMAX’s. It is without a doubt the best concert film I have ever seen. Even if you’re not a fan of the band’s music or “can’t stand Bono”, see this film if you get the chance. It truly captures the intensity of their live show.
