30 Years After New Order's "Blue Monday": Interview with Peter Hook

Peter Hook shares the story of New Order's "Blue Monday" in interview with Rock Hall

Released on March 7, 1983, New Order's "Blue Monday" was a smash. Designed by Factory Records' Peter Saville, the original 12-inch sleeve packaging cleverly replicated a floppy computer disk and included little information about New Order (neither the name of the group nor the single title appeared). Although rumored that the cost of producing the complex die-cut sleeve represented a loss on each single sold by Factory, the seven-minute-plus track would become among the best-selling 12-inch singles of all time. The original single is part of a special Joy Division/New Order exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. 

New Order Blue Monday original single 30-year anniversary"Blue Monday," which took nearly four months to record, was driven by a host of sequencer and synthesizer effects, including the throbbing synth bass line (overlayed with Peter Hook's lead bass stylings), and drum machine beat. The song contained no chorus, instead revolving around a series of verses. The fans voted, and we listened: the Rolling Stones album to be highlighted during tonight's special listening party in the Museum's Foster Theater will be the group's 1971 classic recording Sticky Fingers. After asking fans to decide what Rolling Stones album the Rock Hall should highlight, the votes were tallied and Sticky Fingers rose to the top. Tonight, visitors can listen to the entire album through the Museum's state-of-the-art Foster Theater sound system and take part in an in-depth look at the record led by the Rock Hall's education department. New Film at the Rock Hall: "The Rolling Stones: Charlie is My Darling - Ireland 1965"

The Rolling Stones: Charlie is My Darling – Ireland 1965 opens on Friday, November 8, 2013, in the Museum's Foster Theater, featuring 20 minutes of highlights. The screening coincides with the Rock Hall's feature exhibit Rolling Stones: 50 Years of Satisfaction, on view through March 2014. Admission to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum includes entry into the film.

Recently discovered, never-before-seen-footage was woven into an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with young Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman in The Rolling Stones: Charlie is My Darling – Ireland 1965. First released in 2012, the film was directed by Mick Gochanour and restored by producer Robin Klein, the Grammy Award–winning team that brought the classic The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus to the screen. Charlie is my Darling’s dramatic and stunning concert footage – including electrifying performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “The Last Time” and “Time Is On My Side” – shows the band developing its musical style by blending blues, R&B and rock and roll riffs. Celebrating the Songs and Life of Doc Pomus with Director William Hechter

Remembered not only as a peerless songwriter but also as a formidable personality and cheerful raconteur, 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Doc Pomus was one of the real characters from rock and roll’s golden era. Atlantic Records producer and co-owner Jerry Wexler succinctly described his sphere of influence: "If the music industry has a heart, it would be Doc Pomus." 

Pomus authored among the greatest songs in rock and roll history: "This Magic Moment" (recorded by the Drifters), "A Teenager in Love" (recorded by Dion and the Belmonts) and "Save the Last Dance for Me" (recorded by Ben E. King). Elvis Presley recorded at least 20 Pomus originals. In Cleveland, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum's collection includes the hand-written lyrics to "Save the Last Dance for Me," which Pomus wrote at his wedding, while watching his new bride, Wilma Burke, dancing (pictured below).

Born Jerome Solon Felder in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn on June 27, 1925, he adopted the name Doc Pomus to hide his singing from his parents. Stricken with polio as a child, Pomus was confined to crutches and a wheelchair, though it never slowed him down. For ...
